Leading With Courage During Crisis

Leadership during crisis requires a different type of mindset and attitude that are anchored on courage instead of fear.

The power of great leadership can be demonstrated by this quotation 👉

“An army of sheep led by a Lion, can defeat an army of lions led by a Sheep.”

The paradox of that statement, is that a great Leader can inspire any failed team to become individual top-performers and collective winners.

In other words, great leadership has the power to turn an army of sheep into a potential force that could defeat an army of lions.

Leadership is about Influence, and to lead during crisis, requires the mental attitude of courageousness.

However, courage is not the absence of fear, but the ability to forge ahead in spite of fear and challenging circumstances.

This brings to mind the story of Joshua who was a young leader saddled with the responsibility of leading the nation of Israel, following the death of Moses who led them during the 40 years exodus from slavery in Egypt.

He overcame his discouragement and fears when heard these words; “Be strong and courageous, for you are the one who will lead these people to possess all the land I swore to their ancestors I would give them.” Joshua 1:6

This brings me to next point; the first #Secret to leadership in crisis is 👉to be Courageous and Have no Fear🙉

The acronym FEAR, has been described as False Evidence Appearing Real.

When leaders act under the influence of fear they steer the ship towards the direction of the turbulent waters, instead of away from the turbulence of crisis.

The resultant effect is that the ship (organisation) will eventually capsize🛥️

Bear in mind that the Law of Cause and Effect will always be activated as a natural response to every decision and action taken by anyone, including leaders and their followers.

Proverbially speaking, leadership under the influence of fear is like when a fish wants to decay, it often starts from the head. Once the head (leadership) starts to decay under the influence of fear, it quickly spread to the whole body.👉 Does this sound familiar?

What the global communities are currently facing , is the dire consequences of the irrational decisions taken under the influence of fear of the current crisis by the world leaders and heads of organisations. Too many people are sufferingfrom mental health issues, depression, hunger and even death by suicide as result of lockdown, isolation and destruction of livelihood

However, courage is now required to weather the storm and steer the ship away from turbulence towards global recovery.

Let us be encouraged by the inspiring words spoken to Joshua when he was facing leadership crisis, “This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 NLT

👉#Secret 2: During crisis, a great leader ought to be Proactive rather than Reactive. Being Proactive requires thoughtfulness, mindfulness, emotional and spiritual intelligence. This ensures robust, reliable and rational decision making capability. “Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do. ” Joshua 1:8 NLT

👉#Secret 3: During crisis, a great leaders ought to be Resilient and Collaborative. Psychologists define resilience as the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or significant sources of stress. Colloborative effort helps the leader to build bridges to unite people, rather isolate them. When the people are united they handle the crisis with greater courage

People lose their way without wise leadership, but a nation succeeds and stands in victory when it has many good counselors to guide it. ” Proverbs 11:14 TPT

👉#Secret 4: During crisis, a great leader ought to be Decisive and Accountable: once you have considered all the relevant variables, risk assessment and mitigations. And arrived at a decision, then stick to your playbook and don’t vacillate under the pressure of fear and uncertainty

A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.” James 1:8 KJV

Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do.” Joshua 1:7 NLT

In conclusion, leadership during crisis requires a combination of psychological and behavioral capability that enables the leader to be courageous rather than fearful during crises.
