Overcome The FEAR of CHANGE & DISRUPTION (Part 1)

As human beings, we love our comfort zones so much and detest any circumstances that want to Disrupt our normalities by challenging us to Change.
However, in life CHANGE and DISRUPTION are inevitable. And when this happens we can respond either by INSPIRATION or by DESPERATION.

This is applicable in both business and personal life; because a business can be put out of existence by Disruptive Technology, especially if that business didn’t pivot.
Such were the cases of Blackberry, Blockbuster, Kodak, Borders Group and so many other businesses who have met their sudden demise with the emergence of Disruptive Innovations.

Likewise, CHANGE and DISRUPTION can have serious consequences in our personal lives, depending on how we respond.

This brings me to my next point; it is not what happens to you in life that matters, but How you will Respond.

How would you respond if your life is suddenly disrupted by unforeseen circumstances?
The normal thing for most people is to respond with desperation and fear.

Whenever you are fearful and desperate it limits the ability of your mind to conceptualise a way out of your circumstances.
Consequently, most people become hopeless if they cannot figure out a way out of their challenges.

This is likely to take a toll on their mental health and in extreme cases can lead to depression and suicidal thoughts.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), it is estimated that one person every 10 minutes dies because of suicide.
The WHO also identified depression as a leading cause of disability worldwide, becoming a major contributor to the overall global burden of disease.

This brings me to my next point; many people around the world experienced the power of sudden CHANGE and DISRUPTION in their normal daily lives during the pandemic.
People lost their jobs, families mourned their loved ones who died, and many people lived in isolation and depression due to the lockdown.

Nothing could have prepared anyone for such a terrible period. This is the demonstration of the power of CHANGE and DISRUPTION!
However, the so-called pandemic reminded us that no matter your race, gender identity, religion, qualifications, position, rich or poor you are vulnerable to the power of CHANGE and DISRUPTION.

This reminds me of these words from King Solomon ”No one can predict misfortune. Like fish caught in a cruel net or birds in a trap, so men and women are caught by accidents evil and sudden.” Ecclesiastes 9:12

Therefore, what matters most in life is How you will Respond to CHANGE and DISRUPTION?

This brings me to my final point; if you are going through a dreadful day or facing diverse challenges associated with sudden CHANGE and DISRUPTION, do not be overwhelmed with the question of “Why Me?”

The former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill said, “Success is going from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm.”

Some of the greatest inventions and business start-ups could be attributed to the periods of CHANGE and DISRUPTION such as job loss, pandemics, recessions, and economic uncertainty.

Therefore, when life throws you lemons, use them and make lemonade.
If life throws you into the mud, fight a good fight with faith, because the size of your battle determines the size of your victory.

In the words of Napoleon Hill, “Every adversity, every failure, every heartbreak, carries with It the Seed of an equal or greater benefit”

No matter what life throws at you, what matters most is how you will respond, because your reaction will determine how you can change your setback to a comeback
