Hello Phenomenal Family💐

In today’s newsletter I am going to share with you some valuable insights on the topic l have titled, “The Culture of Excellence.”

So grab your drink, relax and enjoy the ride with me🤝

✍️I will like to open this discussion with a quote from the Greek Philosopher who was very famous for his teachings during the 4th century BC (Before Christ) and was regarded as one of the most influential philosophers to have ever lived, Aristotle, “We are what we repeatedly do; Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit.”

✍️This brings me to my first point, how we do anything in life is an indication of how we do everything because to achieve Excellence in Great things, you have to develop Excellence in small things.

My favourite book says, “If then you have not been faithful in the unrighteous wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? And if you have not been faithful in that which is another’s, who will give you that which is your own?

✍️ During the last FIFA World Cup, most of us watched in awe as the Japanese fans and teams cleaned the stadium at the end of their matches. This is a great example of the Culture of Excellence demonstrated as a result of the Fundamental Principles and Values of the Japanese Culture.

✍️This brings me to my next point; the Pathway to Excellence is paved with self-discipline, respect, gratitude, self-motivation, and sometimes disappointments, delayed gratification, and no reward or recognition.

This is because the Culture of Excellence can only be built and sustained through a strong determination and the willingness to always be excellent, diligent, reliable, considerate, and ethical whilst deploying your services and relating with others whether in business or personal life.

This reminds me of my dad’s mantra, “It is becoming increasingly difficult to be honest and sincere. The honest man in our society today is lonely and unpopular, but he is happy with peace in his heart.”

✍️This brings me to my main point, In any organisational structure, the Culture of Excellence in Leadership should start from the boardrooms to the shop floors (top-down strategy).

This is because it takes a clear Vision and a Mission that is backed by the willingness and sincere efforts to remain focused on the core values and the strategic vision of the organisation, especially during crisis, to build and sustain the Culture of Excellence, Sustainability, Value Innovation and Continuous Improvement.

✍️Furthermore, the Culture of Excellence demands that on both personal and organisational levels there should be a commitment to continuous learning and development to maximise the individual talents and potentials and evolve into the Best Version, collectively as a team.

In the words of Alvin Toffler, “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”

✍️For instance on the cooperate level, leaders can demonstrate continuous learning and sustainable development by integrating environmental, social and governance (ESG) awareness into the vision and the strategic organisational plans to facilitate the understanding of ESG and the UN Sustainability Development Goals (SDG) among the workforce.

This will help to reduce greenhouse emissions by creating more awareness about the impact of the organisation’s products and services to the environment, as well as beyond the products design lifetimes.

✍️Furthermore, this strategy will drive employees’ commitment to deploying Renewable and Sustainable Design Solutions for the production of goods and services that are environmentally friendly with the added benefit of reducing the organisation’s carbon footprint and enhancing the value chain and overall organisational performance.

However, to ensure that everybody in the organisation has the opportunity to make valuable contributions, the leadership should ensure that the organisational structure does not hinder effective communication, especially from the shop floors to the boardroom (bottom-up communication structure) and vice versa.

✍️This means that the project teams need to be motivated and allowed to explore innovative ideas, and take calculated risks to achieve a Culture of Excellence through optimised and sustainable solutions by learning from both their successes and failures.

In the words of Aristotle, “Excellence is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives – choice, not chance, and it determines your destiny.”

✍️ This brings me to my next point, the Culture of Excellence encourages healthy competitions, especially when there is a level playing field that can inspire Excellence through innovation, sustainability, value creation, value capture and value distribution across the ecosystem and value chain.

This is what I consider as the Blue Ocean environment where the fishes (organisations and individuals) have the opportunity to thrive by maximising their potentials through creativity, value innovation and collaborations both within and outside the ecosystem to unlock demands and serve more customers

It has been said that individual players can win medals and awards, but it takes a team to win the championship 🏆 because the team work makes the dream work.

✍️ However, it is appalling when competitions become a bloody war in which the winner grabs it all by every unfair means possible.

Hence, in contrast to the Blue Ocean, the Red Ocean environment is dominated by the Big Sharks (organisations or individuals) who survive by feeding on other fishes and destroying the ecosystem. In other words, the Red Ocean environment does not foster a Culture of Excellence and Sustainability because organisations survive in this environment by focusing on crushing the competition and creating a monopoly that raises the barriers to entry into the market. And this can frustrate and destroy start-ups with valuable business models and strategies.

Similarly, In the Red Ocean workplaces you will find employees who climb the Cooperate Ladder by throwing their colleagues under the bus and backstabbing them (literally), in order to meet their personal KPI and get the recognitions and awards without acknowledging those that helped them.

✍️This brings me to the final point, the Culture of Excellence in both business and personal life, is built and sustained by leveraging individual talents and potentials to work collaboratively within the ecosystem and thrive collectively just like a fishes 🐟 in water💦 by becoming the Best at what we do and contributing to the sustainability of the environment.

In conclusion, to become the Best Version of yourself requires that you should leverage the Culture of Excellence and Sustainability to build the habit for performance improvement and consistency, without lowering your value system to accommodate mediocrity or destroy other people and the ecosystem for personal gains.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, loving favor rather than silver and gold.” Book of Proverbs

We admire Excellence and Success (Great Names & Brands) but often forget that the Big Shots are those who have maximised their potentials by failing many times and rising to become the Best Version of themselves, because they kept shooting without giving up until the arrow hits the target 🎯

📌At this point, permit me to ask you, “What actions will you take today to create a Culture of Excellence that will discourage unhealthy competitions by focusing on value innovation and sustainable developments through a mindset shift in your organisation or personal life?”
