I would like to start today’s newsletter with the following quotations:

According to Wikipedia while consciousness is being aware of one’s environment, body, and lifestyle, self-awareness is the recognition of that awareness. Self-awareness is how an individual experiences and understands their own character, feelings, motives, and desires.
From the foregoing, I will describe Self-awareness as the ability to recognise your Unique Identity by seeing yourself clearly and objectively through reflection and introspection.

This brings me to my next point; the Power of Self-awareness is the process of self-mastery that rely on introspective reflection or self-evaluation, which enables you to identify and conquer all forms of self-sabotage, limiting beliefs and negative environmental programming that have held you back from emerging into the Best Version of yourself.

Furthermore, the Power of Self-awareness empowers you to become the Best Version of yourself by mastering your inner dialogue, dominant thoughts, self-talk, and beliefs and how these factors affect your thinking, decisions, behaviours, self-image and relationship with other people.
This brings to mind the amazing words of the ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu, ‘‘Watch your thoughts, they become your words; watch your words, they become your actions; watch your actions, they become your habits; watch your habits, they become your character; watch your character, it becomes your destiny.”
For Emerging Leaders, the Power of Self-awareness is the foundation for achieving your personal best by leveraging and maximising your highest potential, so that you can unleash the Giant Masterpiece within you.
In the words of Michelangelo, “Every block of stone has a statue inside it, and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it. I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.”
Those words from Michelangelo are a reminder that all of us were born with the Seed of Greatness within us, but it takes the Power of Self-awareness to recognise and maximise our unlimited potentials and become the Best Versions of ourselves.
Furthermore, the Power of Self-awareness is also very critical in how every Emerging Leader relates and collaborates with other people by applying emotional intelligence, spiritual intelligence, social intelligence and cultural intelligence.
This brings me to my main point; in addition to the application of emotional intelligence, spiritual intelligence, social intelligence and cultural intelligence, every Self-aware Leader requires rational and critical thinking when leading a culturally diverse organisation; to avoid the leadership pitfall of relying on preconceived notions which are based on prejudice, and all forms of bias as the baseline for the appointments and promotions of staff, instead of meritocracy.
At this point, I would like to ask you the following:
Have you ever made a decision not to recruit, appoint or promote someone even though that person is the best fit?
Was your decision based on preconceived notions and any form of bias (conscious or unconscious)?
In recent times, Diversity and Inclusion have become the buzzword in most organisations; the aim is to create a culture where everybody feels equal and valued, irrespective of their race, gender, career background, skills and so on.
This notwithstanding, many organisations still have very low representation of the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME), especially at the executive levels and the board rooms.
Even though the acknowledgement of the need for Diversity and Inclusion is a welcomed development, however, it is just a drop of water in the ocean and cannot solve the problem of lack of representation of the BME at the top levels and board rooms of various organisations.
Part of the solution to this issue is to ensure that meritocracy is the baseline for staff recruitment and promotion. And this can only be effective when Diversity and Inclusion are complemented with the Power of Self-awareness; to ensure that culturally diverse teams are led by Self-aware Leaders from the bottom to the top of the organisational pyramid.
This brings me to my final point; it takes the right combination of emotional intelligence, spiritual intelligence, social intelligence and cultural intelligence to become a Self-aware Leader, especially within a culturally diverse organisation.
The Power of Self-awareness is a very important principle for effective leadership because it will empower you to gain self-mastery and reach your highest potential through continuous personal development and the efficient management and control of both your emotional and spiritual states.
My favourite book says, ‘’A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.’’
In life, you can never control what you have not mastered and likewise, you cannot harvest what you have not planted. Hence, to produce a good harvest you must recognise the need to plant the right seed in the garden of your mind. And this is achieved by the reprogramming of your mind, through the process of Learning (empowering knowledge), Unlearning (self-limiting beliefs) and Re-learning .

My favourite book says, ‘’Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.’’
In conclusion, every human being is first a spirit being that has a soul (will, emotion and mind) and lives in a physical body.
In the words of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, ‘‘We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.’’

Therefore, leveraging the Power of Self-awareness would enable you to become proficient in recognising and controlling both your emotional and spiritual states. And that will enable you to become a Self-aware Leader who can recognise the emotional and spiritual states of the people you lead, and communicate with them empathetically and effectively.
In addition to this, it will empower you to develop longer-term solutions that will enable you to proactively respond well in every circumstance; instead of reacting to circumstances with a firefighting mentality

As an Emerging Leader how you respond to circumstances and the people around you, is very crucial, especially within a culturally diverse team, because your reaction would be determined by the level of your self-awareness and that depends on the combination of your emotional intelligence, spiritual intelligence, social and cultural intelligence.
